CANCER SEASON: THE SUMMER SOLSTICE ARRIVES

Updated: Jun 22, 2022

Gemini season goes by in a flash leading up to the Summer Solstice, the longest day and shortest night of the year. The sweetness the extended sunshine promises is always adjacent to the somber reminder that from here through the Winter Solstice, the nights will be growing longer.

The start of summer welcomes the Sun to the sign of Cancer! From June 21st through July 22nd, the Cancer Sun leads us intuitively, instinctually, and emotionally through this bright, bountiful season.

Cancer is the Cardinal Water sign of Summer.

Cardinal signs always initiate the seasons, drawing a firm line in the sand after the in-between state that mutable energy brings. This inspires action in us collectively. Cancer seeks to motivate us to satisfy our ever-changing moods and emotional needs.

When Cancer season begins we are coming down from a whirlwind of overextending ourselves throughout Gemini season. Under this cardinal-water energy, we begin to check in with ourselves emotionally. If we haven’t been able to meet our own needs, we may become more attuned to that by way of burnout or even temper tantrums.

Cancer the Crab is deeply sensitive and cares very much for the well-being of others. The archetype of this sign is that of the mother. Cancers love to make others comfortable and provide for their loved ones/ chosen family endlessly. However, it is much more difficult for them to ask for and accept that same help in return.

Be sure to prioritize your own needs first at this time so you don’t find yourself pouring from an empty cup!

Cancer is ruled by the Moon, which has no warmth or light of its own but rather reflects the light of the Sun. Cancer may appear a bit standoffish at first in a new setting, they are very protective of themselves and need to feel “safe” before opening up. Only once they have completely assessed the environment and are comfortable will they give you access to their nurturing, tender hearts.

Once you gain a Cancer’s trust be sure to never break it, this sign does not forgive easily and they never forget. It is said that one of Cancer’s greatest strengths is its tenacity. This sign does not let go easily and has a penchant for holding grudges, as well as being overly nostalgic for the past. This trait allows them to accomplish a lot but their emotional perspective leaves them wrapped up in their feelings, replaying the past over and over again in their heads.

No matter how much time passes, their perspective keeps the wound open and their pain fresh.

This is where their need for security is built upon. The Crab‘s hard exterior protects their delicate heart. Cancer is equally protective over where ever they consider home to be and most of all their family.

The depth of Cancers' feelings is comparable to the deep undercurrents of the ocean. It can appear still and calm on the surface but what lies beneath should not be underestimated. Like all water signs, Cancer has a rich and colorful inner world that they reserve for themselves alone. They require their own safe space to process or be themselves fully. Much like the Moon, the Cancer individual operates in phases! Sometimes they shine to captivate the masses, others are spent renewing themselves in the darkness. It is really dependent on their emotional state of being.

This Cancer season starts off with Venus in Taurus forming a complimentary trine to Pluto in Capricorn. Pluto has been aspecting all of Venus’ transits since May, starting with a sextile to Venus in Pisces on May 1st, followed by a square to Venus in Aries on May 27th. Each of these aspects has been akin to reaching the boss level of whatever Venus’ mission has been for you under each sign.

In Taurus, Venus has been driving home the importance of tending to our inner gardens in order to give flowers to others. This meeting with Pluto is an opportunity to acknowledge the depths of your heart, the healing you’ve accomplished, and the dead flowers you’ve been watering. When Venus moves into Gemini on June 22nd, she begins playing by an entirely different set of rules.

Venus in Air signs inspires a more casual outlook toward our relationships, money, aesthetics, and values. In Gemini, Venus inspires a need for intellectual stimulation alongside light-hearted fun. The social butterfly of the zodiac, Gemini floats in the wind landing on whatever catches its eye before moving on to the next. This isn’t a time for any serious commitment, but rather a time to keep your heart + mind open, meeting people in new social circles, and explore all of the possibilities.

We have a beautiful new moon in Cancer taking place on June 28th. The Moon renewing herself within her own domicile happens once a year and acts as an extremely potent starting point. Let this be the emotional compass that guides you through the next lunar cycle.

On July 5th change is bustling up in the cosmos as both Mercury and Mars ingress.

Mercury will enter Cancer and Mars will enter Taurus. Each of these planets leaving the sign of their dignity may feel a bit overwhelming for us. Mercury in Cancer is coloring our perspective with subjectivity and Mars in Taurus may react by simply digging their heels in the sand.

We must have compassion for ourselves and one another under these transits. We aren’t accomplishing as much as quickly, but the quality of our results will be far more intentional and emotionally inspired.

There is a full moon in Capricorn on July 13th happening alongside the North Node forming a sextile to the Sun. The full moon shines a light on our future plans and the need to develop a practical plan to achieve our goals. We are being given an opportunity to marry our dreams to our reality. Make space for the unexpected and welcome in your destiny.

Venus speeds her way out of Gemini shortly after on July 17th. Venus loves being in Cancer as Cancer loves to love and nurture. Shortly behind Mercury follows, taking center stage under the light of Leo on July 19th.

The Sun forms its annual opposition to Pluto on this day as well.

Pluto is the harbinger of death and transformation, making it a fitting planet to end a transit interacting with. This transit can indicate struggles with control, manipulation, or self-destructive habits. We may be put in a position where change is put upon us or we may choose to invoke change ourselves. If we allow events to unfold naturally we stand to reach a new peak of growth. It can be hard to see the bigger picture in all of this but whatever occurs on this date is a circumstance of fate.

Once the Sun pushes past the clutches of Pluto, it can rejoice once again in its home sign of Leo! On July 22nd Leo season begins, bringing the heart of summer and the hottest days of the year.
