The second half of Sagittarius season will have a more temperate undertone now that Mercury and Venus have ingressed to Capricorn. Capricorn, the cardinal Earth sign, brings the beginning of the end of the calendar year, where we recommit to our goals, and ideate the optimal versions of ourselves. Capricorn is the sign of sustained ambition, and all the maturity, patience, and wisdom it takes to achieve it. Alongside Sag’s jubilant optimism, Capricorn energy works to create a plan, and take practical steps to ground that in reality.
For the next few weeks, Mercury leads Venus along the celestial path mimicking one another, making the same aspects only days apart. That is until Mercury changes its trajectory on December 28th and begins to retrograde until January 18th. Mercury will remain in Capricorn from December 6th until February 11th. This year (2022) notably, also began with Mercury and Venus retrograde in Capricorn. This time Venus is moving direct through Capricorn, hanging out here from December 9th through January 3rd. Capricorn energy quells the adventurous spirit of Sagittarius, here we are keener to analyze risk before taking calculated action.
Capricorn’s mission is to climb the mountain by taking one step at a time.
Mercury and Venus meeting here will color our outlook with responsibility, authenticity, and dignity in mind. We may find ourselves taking stock, setting new standards, or reaffirming our goals in relation to the Mercurial and Venusian areas of our lives.
Mercury rules over our minds, communication, connection, exchange, and commerce. Mercury in Capricorn is straightforward, serious, and stoic, focused on the path to success and sustainability within its plans. With Capricorn coloring our minds’ eyes, we may find our focus to be driven by ambitions to find success. Though we are more capable of detaching emotion from our thought process, this may lead to others perceiving us as cold or unfeeling. We are more likely to compartmentalize and intellectualize our emotions.
Mercury’s shadow period begins on December 12th, meaning any aspects it makes from this point on will represent recurring themes to be found two more times prior to Mercury finally changing signs in February 2023.
On December 15th, Mercury trines the North and South Nodes of fate and destiny for the first time. We may find sudden clarity around where our focus should be in the future, we are guided by atypical circumstances that align with the person we are becoming. Venus will make this same aspect on December 19th, echoing some of the themes within the context of our relationships, values, or finances.
On December 17th, Mercury trines Uranus, similar in energy to the energy of the nodes, Uranus disrupts, redirects, and shakes things up. We can expect only the unexpected where Uranus is involved. This day can have a similar energetic feel to Mercury retrograde specifically in relation to technology. Our intuition can feel heightened, if we are open, we may receive messages through dreams. On the other hand, your mind may feel so restless it may be difficult to sleep at this time.
Venus trines Uranus on December 22nd, making way for unexpected partnerships, or sudden revelations in regard to the Venusian areas of our lives. Messages can be found through music, dreams, or media. The energy of this transit is that of a pleasant surprise.
Christmas Eve hosts a soft, dreamy Mercury sextile to Neptune, inviting in all the nostalgia and fantasy of a Hallmark movie. This aspect lends our outlook compassion and spiritual love, it is an excellent energy to exercise your creative mind, especially in relation to art or music. This is the calm before the storm that is Mercury retrograde.
From December 29th through January 18th, Mercury appears to backspin from our perspective on Earth. Mercury retrograde is widely demonized as a time when nothing works as it should, we experience delays, misunderstandings, or unexpected endings. Though this may be true at times, for the most part, Mercury retrograde is a time to check in with yourself, your mindset or beliefs, your goals, or your relationships.
Under the lens of Capricorn we may find ourselves asking, is this something that benefits me in the long haul? Does my input match my output? Are there boundaries that I need to create for the sake of my own peace of mind?
This retrograde will highlight issues surrounding authority, dynamics of power, and public image. Saturn-ruled Capricorn rectifies imbalances swiftly, working within the confines of the current structure to highlight what works and what does not.
Mercury retrograde tends to influence us to internalize our thoughts and feelings. Capricorn’s influence can lead us to maintain lofty standards of self or push ourselves too hard in striving for perfection. Try not to feed into pessimism or hyper-critical mentalities. Under Mercury Retrograde, everything is not as it appears to be. Clarity is easier reached once Mercury passes over the celestial path for the third and final time.
Mercury aligns with Venus on December 29th, the day this retrograde transit begins. This transit fosters harmony within our hearts and minds. We may feel inspired to deepen our commitments to someone or something. Venus in Capricorn inspires us to get serious about our futures and where we are investing our time.
Venus rules over matters of the heart, of course, but also our relationship with money, our self-esteem, our aesthetic, or what we find to be pleasing. Capricorn energy is concerned with sustainability, optimization, setting out to achieve accomplishments methodically and efficiently, return on investment, and climbing to the highest high our ambitions can reach. Venus here can lend a sobering viewpoint on love and a focus on boosting our savings rather than excessive spending. We are thinking about what we really need and rejecting frivolity.
We are seeking quality over quantity here with stability and security in mind.
Capricorn energy reminds us that success isn’t found instantaneously and we can find much more fulfillment when progress is made slowly over time. When fire energy works with earth energy, the spark of inspiration becomes actualized and tangible. Fire energy is excitable, spreading quickly in every direction and can burn out quickly. Earth energy knows the day you plant the seed is not the same day you reap the fruit. Under this influence, we can take pride in the process and know that we are moving forward one step at a time.
